UAL is the first university in the UK to receive the Gold Catering Mark by the Soil Association across all catering outlets at all six of its colleges.
The Catering Mark provides an independent endorsement that food providers are taking steps to improve the food they serve, using fresh ingredients which are free from trans fats, harmful additives and GM, and better for animal welfare.
UAL was thoroughly inspected by the Soil Association earlier this year to ensure that all catering outlets, run by caterers BaxterStorey, across Camberwell College of Arts, Central Saint Martins, Chelsea College of Arts, London College of Communication, London College of Fashion and Wimbledon College of Arts, meet the highest standards of provenance and traceability, providing reassurance to students and staff that meals are freshly prepared using environmentally-sustainable and seasonal ingredients.
Head of Catering and Retail at UAL Alastair Johns said:
“Achieving the Food for Life Gold award is a huge achievement and demonstrates just how committed UAL is to improving our sustainability and food standards across all six of our college campuses. This benefits not only students and staff who use the canteens, but also the local economy and food producers. I hope by reaching this level we and BaxterStorey are setting the highest standards and commitments of food quality and provenance, and that we really are ensuring that the journey from farm or field to UAL is as short as possible.”
