Building User Guide
Please find a simple building user guide for 272 High Holborn at http://newsevents.arts.ac.uk/6449/high-holborn-building-user-guide/
How to reach the new site
272 High Holborn is in WC1. It has excellent transport links, with access to the Central line and Piccadilly line from Holborn tube station approximately 100 yards away and access to the Central line from Chancery Lane equally close to the building. Bus route numbers 8, 25, 242, 17, 45, 46 stop nearby. There are also secure bicycle storage facilities for those who wish to cycle.
ID cards
If you have not yet received your new ID card, which provides access to the building and also the multifunctional devices (MFDs) for printing, photocopying etc, please contact Jeff Tee in the Facilities Management team in the first instance, (Monday and Friday). Matt Chesney and Errol Ali will be issuing the new cards when they are ready, and staff should return their old cards to them. If you have been issued with a new card which isn’t working, please email Jeff at j.tee@arts.ac.uk
For the foreseeable future students will be required to show their existing passes for access to the areas they are entitled to visit at the new building i.e. lower ground, ground, first, second and parts of third and fourth floors. We will not at present be issuing new ID cards for students.
Where members of staff wish to secure individual rooms the Assistant Facilities Managers will be pleased to assist at agreed times. Their contact numbers are Mobex 3876 or 3558.
The rear doors of the building are strictly for emergency exit only. Cycles may be brought into the building’s cycle park through the loading bay next to the rear exit doors where one of our Facilities staff will normally be located. There is an intercom at the rear doors which connects to reception who will alert our Facilities Assistant to the presence of cyclists by radio.

Special ticket offer: Ron Arad Restless at the Barbican
Bold, experimental and inventive, Ron Arad defies categorisation, and the exhibition of his work at the Barbican art gallery, London, is similarly quirky. It charts three decades of Arad’s works and gives a unique insight into the thinking behind them. You can try out some of his chairs, and play ping pong on a table designed for the show – and University of the Arts London staff and students can take advantage of this special online offer and buy three tickets for £15 (full price £10 per person). Book your tickets online today at www.barbican.org.uk/artgallery using the promotion code 34203. Exhibition runs until 16 May. ‘A dazzling, endlessly distracting experience’. Time Out****

Who is where at High Holborn
The majority of the 11 floor building is open plan, with some offices for senior members of staff and a suite of bookable meeting rooms. The three floors from the lower ground to the first houses student facing services, which includes the learning zone, café, gallery, lecture theatre, Students’ Union, Student Services, Creative Careers and the activity area. LCF and the Language Centre have teaching rooms, reception spaces and offices on the first to fourth floors. Central services departments occupy the building from the fifth floor upwards.
See a floor directory for the new building here.
An exciting new development is a Student Centre on the first floor, bringing together Student Services, Housing, and including other services such as some of Registry, to offer one place for students to come with their enquiries, located next to the Students’ Union.
Walking Tours of High Holborn
A set of walks have been arranged which are open to all staff based at High Holborn. These historical walks around the Holborn area are led by a professional guide and history graduate, Aly Mir from inholborn, and are a great introduction to the Holborn area and its history. They are also a good way to get to know colleagues within the building. The walks (detailed below) each last around an hour and will start at 12.00; if there is enough interest we will split the group and run a second walk at 13.00. Places will be allocated on a first come first served basis.
• Tuesday 20th April – Horrible Holborn (about executions and gruesome incidents)
• Thursday 29th April – Induction to Holborn (a mixture of history of the area and an introduction to the area today)
• Monday 10th May – Very Old Holborn (on buildings in Holborn from before the time of the Great Fire)
• Tuesday 18th May – Gray’s Inn (a tour of the Gray’s Inn area)
• Thursday 27th May – Bow Street Runners (part 1) – Pioneers of Policing
• Thursday 3rd June – Bow Street Runners (part 2) – London Monster
• Tuesday 8th June – Hendrix’s Holborn
Please let Jess Armistead know as soon as possible if you would be interested in attending any or all of these walks and she will confirm your place with you once they have received enough requests. The walks will set out from the reception at 272.
inholborn also run public lunchtime walks that are open to everybody and leave from Holborn tube station; further information can be found at: http://inholborn.org/articles/view/341. They have tried to arrange for subjects that aren’t available publicly for the University walks.
What will be available when
Almost all student facilities are now up and running from 19 April, including Students’ Union offices, LCF and Language Centre classes, Student Services and Housing Services, Registry for hardship funds and scholarships applications, Creative Careers student coaching and CV checks appointments, ArtsTemps, ECCA, the activities studio, blueprint café bar, and arts student radio booth. From 26 April all services will be running including the Learning Zone, bike store and shower facilities on the lower ground floor.
The University gallery will be open by the autumn term.
Health and Safety at High Holborn
Find specific information on our new site at http://www.arts.ac.uk/hr/health-safety/62626.htm
Catering Provision
Tea, coffee and milk are available for staff use and are provided in all kitchen areas. There are kitchen areas on all floors with boiling and chilled water on tap.
There are fridges in each kitchen which staff can use for storing packed lunches etc. These will be cleared out and cleaned each weekend. As is normal in open plan working environments, staff are asked not to eat cooked/strong smelling food at their desks, and as a result there aren’t microwaves, toasters, cookers etc in the kitchen areas.
There is no staff room at High Holborn but the space allocated to the café on ground floor is substantial to take this into account. We hope that staff and students alike will use this space. Catering in the cafe will include hot meals and be provided by the Students’ Union.
Richbell Place
Finance and Estates will remain at Richbell Place. As part of the move from Davies Street the central Enterprise Team and CLTAD teaching rooms will relocate to Richbell Place. The conversion of the ground floor of Richbell House is underway to provide a new home for some business services.
Find out more information on the LCF changes at http://www.fashion.arts.ac.uk/the-big-move/
Telephones
A new telephone system has been installed in High Holborn. Read more about the updates to the University’s telephone system here.
Sustainability
We are considering all options to increase the green credentials of the building and will look at improving areas such as recycling, refuse collection and printer logistics to achieve this.
Recycling bins are provided throughout the building. Food-contaminated waste and polystyrene will need to be separated out but it is hoped that everything else can be recycled. To facilitate this, individual under-desk bins will not be allowed (currently the University uses 500,000 plastic bags a year from under-desk bins) and shared recycling bins will be spread throughout the building so people can easily dispose of their waste.
Artwork from the University Collection
The University Art Collection is open for loan requests. Staff are invited to join the queue for art for your office by contacting Angelica Sule at a.sule@arts.ac.uk. Please be sure that you are properly settled into your space and will not be moving furniture or ordering additional bits before reserving a place in the queue.
Email signature
Please could all staff moving to the new site update their email signature to read “University of the Arts London’s new address is 272 High Holborn, London WC1V 7EY. Please update your address book.”
