Chris Wainwright, former Head of Colleges at Camberwell, Chelsea and Wimbledon, has passed away.

It is with great sadness that we have to announce the sudden death of Professor Chris Wainwright.

Chris was Dean of Fine Art at Central Saint Martins and then Pro Vice-Chancellor and Head of Camberwell, Chelsea and Wimbledon Colleges of Arts for nine years until his retirement in 2016. Chris was also a very successful artist and curator whose practice was located in photography, performance and installation. His work is held in many major collections across the world including the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris and the Polaroid Corporation, Boston and he was rightly proud of his recent exhibition ‘We Are All Stars’ at the Nihonbashi Institute of Contemporary Art, Tokyo in 2016.

Chris lived life to the full and at the time of his death was working on a number of major projects including an upcoming exhibition in London. It is sad that he will not see those projects come to fruition but his legacy will live on through his body of work and in the memories of his many friends at UAL. In due course we will hold an event to celebrate Chris’s life and works – more details to follow – but in the meantime, our thoughts are with his wife Anne and the rest of his family.
