Professor Oriana Baddeley, UAL’s Dean of Research has been appointed to the REF2021 sub-panel for Art and Design: History Theory, Practice.
An art historian and member of the research centre for Transnational Art, Identity and Nation (TrAIN), Professor Baddeley forms part of the sub-panel responsible for determining the criteria and guidance for REF2021 art and design research submissions. She will also be consulted by the subject’s main panel as their chosen interdisciplinary expert.
Professor Baddeley said:
“It is an honour to join the REF2021 sub-panel 32, responsible for informing how the UK understands the quality of university research in Art and Design: history, theory and practice.
The Research Excellence Framework has an important role determining how research outputs are measured and giving peer review input into public funding decisions. I look forward to working with the chair and my fellow panel members as we look towards the next round of assessments of university art and design research under REF2021.”
The REF is the UK’s system for assessing the excellence of research in higher education institutions. The REF was first carried out in 2014, replacing the previous Research Assessment Exercise.
The selected panel members include leading researchers and individuals with expertise in the wider use and benefits of research, as well as members with an international perspective on the main panels.
UAL has a vibrant research culture across its six colleges, with nine University Research Centres and the University Innovation Insights Hub, which lead innovative research and disseminate this through exhibitions, publications, conferences, festivals and workshops. The university’s research is focused on four key global concerns: Living with Environmental Change, Lifelong Health and Wellbeing, Digital Futures and Community Resilience.
