Ideas in Progress seminar: Curating Postmodernism

Announcing the first Ideas in Progress seminar from the Fashion History and Theory Research Group at Central Saint Martins.

Curating Postmodernism

In this seminar Dr Glenn Adamson, co-curator of the recent V&A exhibition ‘Postmodernism: Style and Subversion 1970 to 1990′, will discuss the central place of stylisation in the history and theory of postmodern design. He will also describe the process by which the show was put together, including collaboration with external designers, and his experiences working with living artists, architects and designers to reconstruct narratives of the 1970s and ’80s.

Glenn Adamson is Head of Research at the Victoria and Albert Museum. Dr. Adamson is co-editor of the triannual Journal of Modern Craft, and the author of Thinking Through Craft (Berg Publishers/V&A Publications), an anthology entitled The Craft Reader (Berg, 2010), and the forthcoming book The Invention of Craft (Berg, 2012). His other publications include the co-edited volume Global Design History (Routledge, 2011). Postmodernism: Style and Subversion 1970 to 1990 was on view at the V&A from September 2011 to January 2012 and is now touring in Europe.

Research Design & Methodology in Marketing & Design Workshop

This workshop, run by Tony Kent; Associate Dean of Research at London College of Fashion, follows on from the successful first Marketing and Design Colloquium that took place at the University of Lincoln in conjunction with Brunel University.  Amongst the important strands of research that emerged was the need to examine research methodologies in an interdisciplinary context.  There is clearly some common ground in research design, methodologies and analysis between the two subject areas: equally clearly there are distinctive differences.

Areas of interest in Design and Marketing research (individually or in both areas) include:

  • Epistemology and Ontology; philosophy and ideology including postmodernism and their influence on research
  • Post-postitivism, Constructivism and Mixed Method Research; their traditions and current approaches
  • Research Design
  • Qualitative Strategies
  • Quantitative Strategies
  • Methodologies, e.g. Case Studies, Visual Research, Ethnography, Semiotics, Discourse and Historical
  • Prototyping
  • Envisioning
  • Research Methods and techniques
  • Work in Progress and Reflections on Research Practices
  • Emergent or New Methodologies or Methods

This two day conference will be hosted by the CCW Graduate School on May 11-12 at Millbank. The conference is part of the SHARE research and networking project focused on developing Europe wide standards and protocols for research in the arts and accompanying doctoral programs.

The emphasis of this second SHARE conference is development. The challenges, opportunities and critical issues faced in the building of new – and the further development of existing – programmes and platforms for third cycle (doctoral) education and research for the creative arts. Over two days of presentations, break-out groups, workshops and discussions, the conference will bring together researchers, educators, visual artist, designers, performing artist, and media practitioners from across Europe to think through the practical and theoretical challenges in developing doctoral level education in creative art practices. We believe this conference offers the UAL research community the opportunity to experience our own UK based perspective of arts based alongside the wider regional vision.

The conference will take place on Friday 11th May 9.30am-5pm and Saturday 12th May 10.00am-5pm.

‘I ask my colleagues if I am to be the only one to fill the shelves with books on costume and film’.

Professor Deborah Landis

Professor Deborah Landis is the curator of ‘Hollywood Costume’, the much anticipated V&A exhibition which will be the largest of its kind in decades.  She is also a prolific and internationally recognised costume designer of iconic films such as ‘Indiana Jones’ and ‘The Blues Brothers’ and the author of several publications on Costume and Film.  She has been a tireless and passionate advocate of the subject and her exhibition will expose the complexity of this subject, and, while foregrounding its designers, it will analyse the extensive and detailed craft deployed in creating a character through costume.  Only through such specific and involved work can the characters be as iconic and memorable in their imagined and crafted identities.

This event is launches a series of talks titled Marking the Paradigm Shift in Design for Performance Through Costume organised by Donatella Barbieri for the Research Hub in Performance, LCF.

Focused on cutting edge practice and research on the subject of costume these sessions will make evident shifts in the way this subject is perceived and practiced.

They will draw on recent and future exhibitions, performances and publications, and put the spotlight on scholars and practitioners who are making changes to the culture that performance operates in, specifically through their work on costume, as curators, practitioners and authors.

Future events will include masterclasses with Nicky Gillibrand, at the V&A on 22nd May, and Dr Melissa Trimingham in July at the Barbican.
