Sophy Rickett’s new work exhibited in Bristol
To The River, new work by Sophy Rickett, a senior lecturer in MA Photography at London College of Communication, will be on display at the Arnolfini in Bristol from 3 March to 22 April 2012.
Rickett’s installation incorporates video and surround-sound audio, creating an immersive environment that portrays the anticipation of the crowd on the banks of the river at night awaiting the tidal surge. It takes its inspiration from the Severn Bore – an amazing phenomenon of nature whereby a large tidal wave runs along the River Severn during the moon’s equinox.
Premiered as a part of Artsway’s New Forest Pavilion at the Venice Biennale this year, To The River develops Rickett’s interest in the role of the camera as a mediator between people and the natural world, and explores how light and darkness define and articulate our relationship to space. Predominantly using lens-based media – photography and video – she considers the abstract possibilities and narrative tendencies of these media formats. Made mainly at night, her works are often minimal in character, playing on the latent narrative possibilities of place.

LCF hosts Ozwald Boateng
On Thursday 23rd February London College of Fashion hosted an exclusive screening of the new Ozwald Boateng film ‘A Man’s Story’.
LCF students and staff enjoyed drinks and popcorn courtesy of Red Bull before the screening of the film, a full-length documentary covering the last 12 years of Ozwald Boateng’s life.
After the screening Ozwald Boateng OBE, entered the packed out auditorium to a standing ovation to launch his exciting design competition. Design students nationwide can enter on the ‘A Man’s Story’ Facebook page for the chance of an internship at the Ozwald Boateng studios.
Following the competition launch, students got the chance to ask the man himself some of their burning questions. These ranged from students asking about his sources of inspiration and the belief behind his collections to a marriage proposal!

Simon Linington and William Mackrell’s first “solo” exhibition challenges the boundaries of sculpture, performance and art acts, exhibiting works which are created collaboratively but in competition. Opening at the Arts Gallery on 21 March, Take Two will feature works that appear to be illogical, absurd or destined to sabotage themselves, poised between sincere endeavour and inevitable futility.
Take Two presents a series of performance works through video shown alongside props as relics of the acts. These include the steel bar the duo attempt to hold aloft in a performance of tragicomic endurance, ‘Propping up a Bar’. Preceding the exhibition they will perform ‘Take Two’, leaving marks on the wall as the memory of the action.
Linington and Mackrell’s work is primarily physical and sculptural, dealing with weight, action, space and stature at its core – fundamental concerns of creative practice throughout art history. The duo devises and deploys abstract rules as a conceit to provoke their individual interpretations of their practice and as a means to introduce a sense of chance and constraint.
Key to their work is the introduction of competition within the boundaries of collaborative practice and the absurdist humour that their work ultimately realises. This humour is a reflection of the absurdity that exists in the everyday and is a release for artist and viewer. The artists state: ‘Our refusal to give in to obstacles often provokes repetitive strategies that have the potential to pass through the threshold of tedium and into humour.’
Simon Linington and William Mackrell graduated in Fine Art from Chelsea College of Art and Design, University of the Arts London in 2006 & 2005. The Take Two artists’ book will be available for sale in a limited edition of 10, hand finished and numbered by the artists, priced at £300 exclusively from the Arts Gallery.
