Green Week 2012

University of the Arts London’s annual  Green Week runs 6-10 February, with a programme of events and activities encompassing everything from film screenings to nature talks,  Pants to Poverty walks to Pecha Kuchas, plus conferences, workshops, debates and exhibitions.

This year’s stimulating programme includes a travelling roadshow from the Estates team, featuring exhibits including recycling awareness and behaviour change, battery recycling awareness, a water management systems display, a lighting control model display, a central heating control model, a new energy “automatic monitoring and recording” display. 6 February

Bike Zoetrope,  6 Feb, 10am – 5pm, LCC, Upper Street Gallery
A pedal-powered zoetrope creating an animation on a rotating bicycle wheel.

Jewellery making – Plastic Seconds, LCC, Upper Street Gallery 10am – 5pm
Drop into an all-day workshop and meet Maria Papadimitriou who reuses discarded plastic in a variety of ingenious ways. Start to consider how you might see (cradle to cradle) material regeneration as a key aspect of your own practice.

Carbon Footprinting Workshop with Carbon Descent, 10 – 4pm Green Room, Chelsea College of Art and Design
Independent social enterprise Carbon Descent will be running a special one off workshop for staff and students of the CCW Graduate School. The day will mix theories and practice and include a brief introduction to carbon footprinting; asking what makes a carbon footprint and what factors might contribute to the carbon footprint of the college?What is the biggest contributor to the carbon footprint of the college?Other topics will include looking at the lifecycle of an everyday product and how to engage people with social change. The day will conclude with two hands on workshop sessions: the first on eco-mapping and the second waste auditing.    To book email Holly Stevenson

Sustainable Office Spaces Workshop, 11am, Room F16, Curtain Road, LCF
A workshop to discuss ideas and issues around the creation of new staff office workspaces for LCF.
The workshop will lead to the development of two new pilot offices for the next academic year which will, in turn, aid the future planning of our sites and redevelopment, so we can work in a new type of sustainable and effective staff office.

Free bike repair sessions with Dr. Bike. Anything from a new brake cable to unbuckling wheels.New cyclists welcome to drop in and discuss their cycling needs.

Police Bike Marking, LCC Containers 10am – 1pm
Get your bike UV marked for free. In case of loss or theft, the police can trace the owner.

T-Shirt Printing, Upper Street Gallery, 10am – 5pm
Bring an old t-shirt from home or charity shop or buy one available, and get the LCC Cycling Club (LCCCC) logo printed on it for free.

Magnificent Revolution, LCC Upper Street Gallery 10am – 5pm
4-Bike powered cinema showcasing short films for anyone to ride.

Bike Swap Shop, LCC, Upper Street Gallery 10am – 5pm
Bring in your spare bike parts and swap them for something you need.

One hour Bike Tour with staff member Jackie Blake, Meet outside LCC at 3pm
Join the LCC Cycling Club (LCCCC) for a ride around Southwark and see some cultural highlights.

Film Screening, LCC, Street Lecture Theatre 4.30pm
HOME: A mesmerising depiction of how all the Earth’s problems are interlinked, and what we can do to help. Plus showing of an important Ted Talk by Ed Gillespie – Sustainability the Reinvention of Progress.

Dennis Gould Letterpress artist, LCC, Upper Street Gallery 10am – 5pm
Dennis Gould letterpress cyclist, poet and activist exhibits his work as featured in Boneshaker magazine and speaks about his love of cycling and his belief that cycling is a political act.

Skip Garden, CSM, King’s Cross, Back entrance by gate 22, 1-4pm
Volunteers needed to participate in making and mending jobs within the skip garden, and planting up a wildflower area. You will need warm (and old) clothing and sturdy shoes.

Design Surgery, LCC, Lower Street Gallery Two sessions 11am – 12pm and 2 – 4pm
A unique opportunity for all creative practitioners. Four industry experts will be on hand tall day to inject creative sustainable thinking into any creative project you are developing. Panel members include Sophie Thomas, Founding Director of thomas.matthews, Tara Hanrahan of think/do, artist and curator Clare Patey and Tim Milne of Artomatic.

Greenzine workshop stall and human sketchbook bookmaking machine, LCC, Upper Street Gallery 10am – 5pm
Students are invited to take part in a zine workshop and to make and bind their own sketchbooks with character. Recycled paper will be supplied. Come along with your green ideas and ideas.

Sophie Thomas talk, LCC, Main Lecture Theatre 12.30 – 1.30pm
Sophie Thomas of Useful Simple Trust and founder of thomas.matthews , Greengaged and Three Trees don’t Make a Forest, talks about her design practice. Sophie is perhaps the most active genuinely green designer and campaigner for sustainable design thinking in the UK today.

Bring in your old and unwanted paperbacks or design & photography books and swap them.

Guerrilla Gardening, LCC, Outside College, 10 – 5pm
Take part in a guerrilla gardening project outside the College and help to ‘green up’ Elephant & Castle.

Speakers: Lorraine Gamman and Adam Thorpe of the Socially Responsive Design and Innovation Hub, Design Against Crime Research Centre. Free admission, all welcome. In the complexity of contemporary society, social innovation is spreading and its potential, as a driver of sustainable change, is increasing. 9 February

Lucky Skip with Garudio Studiage, LCC,  Upper Street Galley, 10 – 5pm
Take part in a huge lucky dip! Students are invited to bring in their unwanted Christmas presents rewrapped or in fact any artefacts that they no longer require and to fill the Lucky Skip – taking a new gift in exchange. Seeing new potential in redundant objects is a key aspect of green design practice. Chris Radcliff will be running a workshop and on hand to discuss is practice.

Green talk double bill: Creative Activism, LCC, Main Lecture Theatre, 12.30 –1.45pm
What Green Means Paul Hamilton designer for Greenpeace: Paul will explore his ideas of Green in terms of visual design, communication and ethics. He will discuss how the term ‘Green’ and ‘Green-washing’ has come into being and what it can look like and mean in reality – both positively and negatively.

Use your creativity, Leo Murray of Plane Stupid is an activist and a filmmaker.  His passionate and meticulously researched animated film on Climate Change has been viewed by more that 1 million people and his beliefs have seen him scale the Houses of Parliament.

Food Loop – Enabling composting and food growing in urban environments, 4pm, Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design King’s Cross Campus (Lecture Theatre E002/E003), Granary Building, 1 Granary Square,  N1C 4AA
Speaker: Clare Brass, Team Leader, SustainRCA and Founder and Director of SEED Foundation. Free admission, all welcome. Food Loop Maiden Lane is a new project running on the Maiden Lane estate, in Camden, north London.
The project is working with residents to design a scheme that will help them to recycle their food waste. The food waste is composted on-site and used to grow fruit and vegetables. Project leader Clare Brass will introduce the project and explain how CSM students can get involved.

The University aims to create a culture of social and environmental awareness in order to develop and integrate sustainable and ethical practice throughout all aspects of our life and work. Come, share your experiences of sustainability as a tutor or student, and see how the University aims to promote, recognise and reward courses that promote and engender environmental awareness and sustainable practice.

Make the Nature Connection – A workshop to reconnect with nature, venues  to be confirmed, workshops will run both North and South of the river in outside spaces
Nature’s power thrives in the midst of London’s streets, but the pace of everyday life often cut us off from its revitalising energy. During this short workshop you will learn to open your senses, attune with the invigorating power of nature and come to a deeper sense of connection. You will learn simple but powerful ways to enhance your sensory awareness and explore creative exercises that can inspire personal change. Join this workshop to experience how the nature connection can invigorate mind and body. The workshop will be facilitated by ecopsychologist Dr Adrian Harris. Workshop bringing together year 1 students from BATD and BA Product involving Linda Florence/ Jane Penty and Anne Marr, all day, CSM
The focus of this mini project will be: exploring different aspects of sustainable design philosophies and how can designers “design” a more sustainable consumer behaviour.

Furniture Painting , LCC, Upper Street Gallery, 10 – 5pm
40 volunteer illustrators will ‘up-cycle’ LCC discarded furniture. This day-long interaction will demonstrate that artefacts, normally destined for a skip, can be reconsidered and develop a new value. This basic design principle is demonstrated when the furniture will be sold or auctioned afterwards.

LCC Knitting Society, Upper Street Gallery, 10 – 5pm
All students and staff invited to join in/drop in on the Knitting Circle during the day to take part in a collective knit in. Bring your needles and enthusiasm. Beginners welcome.

D&AD Lecture: D&AD Green Industry Talk, LCC, Main Lecture Theatre, 10.30am – 12pm
D&AD Green Industry introduction and talk by Nat Hunter of Airside who will present a green design project case study.
