As part of the Wellcome Trust’s 75th anniversary celebrations, senior citizens from Camden and Central Saint Martins BA Textile Design students collaborated in a series of craft workshops hosted by the Victoria and Albert Museum in May 2011. Join us for the subsequent ‘Threads and Yarns’ event, to be held at the V&A on 18th July 2011.

This vibrant project promotes intergenerational conversation around biomedical themes. Whilst participants engaged in creative making – they made hundreds of flowers from different types of yarn – they shared their personal histories, and their experiences of health and well-being spanning 75 years. In doing so they explored changes in many areas of public health. The rich narratives collected from students and seniors will enable the Wellcome Trust’s network of researchers in science, history of medicine and medical humanities to examine and develop connections and accounts of specific and general biomedical advances over the past 75 years.

On July 18th the audience will hear first hand accounts from many of those involved in the workshops, including seniors and historians. There will also be opportunities for everyone to try their hand at craft skills throughout the day, plus see the display of inspiring work created from the flowers made during the earlier workshops.
